Reclining Buddha at Wat Lokayasutharam, Ayutthaya

These are photos of the reclining Buddha at Wat Lokayasutharam in Ayutthaya Thailand. This is one of the must see sites of the city. This Buddha image is 37 meters long and 8 meters high, and one of the largest in Thailand. This reclining position portrays the Buddha as he passed away peacefully.

On the day that I visited this temple, the Buddha image was being cleaned.

Thai people still come to Wat Lokayasutharam to pay their respects to the Buddha by offering lotus flowers and incense.

This Buddha image is constructed of brick which is covered by cement. This is the classic construction style that is seen in the ancient ruins of Ayutthaya.

These are more photographs of Ayutthaya, Thailand. Ayutthaya is known for its temples and ancient structures made of bricks. Many of these structures are 500 or more years old. These photos were taken at Wat Thammikarat in Ayutthaya. This Wat is sort of off the beaten track of the main temples and there is no fee to enter.

Lots of Roosters. These are associated with King Naresuan who ruled Thailand from Ayutthaya over 400 years ago. Roosters are always placed around his image all over Thailand.

I haven't added any photos to the blog for a while. I guess thats what happens when you are abroad and have fluctuating internet capabilities. Now that I am back in the states, I am trying to post my pictures from this past year. Hope you enjoy! The first batch is from Ayutthaya, Thailand. This is a beautiful ancient city near Bangkok. It's a nice place to take a day trip if you are staying in the city. I suggest renting bicycles or motorbikes so that you can run around the city and visit all of the sites on your own. The traffic is pretty calm here for Thailand, so it's pretty easy to get around.

These are photographs of Bang Bao on Ko Chang, Thailand. Bang Bao is a small fishing village on the southern tip of Koh Chang. The village is situated along a pier and has lots of seafood restaurants and kitchy shops. The village is still relatively Thai, and hasn't been completely overrun by farang tourists. There are still lots of Thai tourists that come here for holiday.

The roof of Bao An Temple. The roofs of Taoist temples are always decorated with folklore creatures. This one has two dragons and a red pearl in the center. The dragons chase the pearl to make rain.

The entire outside of the temple walls are covered in Chinese folklore paintings. This is a depiction of a scene from the Three Kingdoms, which is a Chinese classic.

This is a little fortune telling station in Bao An temple. After people pray with the moon blocks, they get a stick with a number on it. That stick correlates to a drawer that will have a fortune. You can take your fortune to the temple fortune tellers and they will interpret it for you.

I have a lot of photos from Bao An. Equipped with my new Nikon DSLR, I find myself taking hundreds of photographs a day. I guess I don't really know which ones to post or not. Also, Because of spacing and weird blogging issues, I think it is better to only post about 5 photos on one post. This means that I will have multiple pages for each place I go....maybe not good....maybe good....not sure...but definitely tedious....hmmmm... Anyway, here are some more from Bao An. Enjoy!

A mural at Bao An Temple. The walls of the temple are elaborately decorated with murals which are depictions from popular folk lore. It is kind of like how some churches have the stages of the cross, or other Bible stories painted on the walls.

Offering on the altar of a Taoist temple. Taiwanese people will often leave elaborate offerings on the altar of temples.

This lantern is above the entrance to Bao An temple. I really dig all the lanterns, especially when they are lit up.

Cute Baby. I saw this baby walking around the temple grounds. I thought he was cute. I also thought this turned out to be an interesting composition.

This old man was riding a bike near Bao An temple. I like photos of people. And yes, he is shirtless in the city. hmmm....

Paper Money Burning Furnace. Daoists put paper money into this furnace when they go to the temple.

The Confucius Temple near Bao An Temple. This is a very famous Confucius Temple in Taipei. On Confucius day (Teacher's Day) in Taiwan, there is a big celebration for the ghost of Confucius.

These photos were taken on the street in India. I love taking street photos. There is always so much action in India, that there are about 200 good photographs on every block. Sometimes I would take street photos while riding in a rickshaw.

Tibetan Refugees in Bylakuppe Camp, India

These are photos of Tibetan refugees at a Tibetan refugee camp in South India called Bylakuppe. These are older people who left Tibet in the 1950's and 1960's when China was first invading Tibet.

Photo of a Tibetan woman gardening. This cat was just lounging on this woman's back as she picked vegetables. The woman didn't seem to mind, and she was laughing when I asked to take her picture. This is one of the sweetest things I have ever seen. I have a soft spot for cats.

Photo of Tibetan Medicine Doctor. I visited this man's traditionall Tibetan medicine clinic at the Tibetan refugee camp. Tibetan medicine is a holistic form of medicine, that incorporates all aspects of health, including spiritual health. The diagnosis process is a lot like Traditional Chinese medicine, feeling the pulse and looking inside the mouth. The doctor may prescribe certain herbs or even meditation to cure his patients.

These photos are from a Tibetan Refugee Camp in Bylakuppe, India. I visited this camp in 2006 when I was studying abroad in India. This camp is interesting because it is in southern India. Most of the Tibetan refugee settlements are in Northern India. These are photos of Tibetan Artists and Artisans at the refugee camp.

These are traditional Tibetan Buddhism paintings depicting gods and goddesses of Tibetan religion. The art is very exact, making sure that each paintings has the right proportions and colors and details.

These are photos of the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, Morocco. This is a newly built mosque that is constructed over the ocean. Inside, the floor is made of glass so you can see the ocean while you are praying. Unfortunately I did not have the chance to go inside. Foreigners and non-Muslims can only go in the mosque on a tour. It is the largest mosque in Morocco, and the third largest mosque in the world, after the mosques in Mecca and Medina.

Archaeology in Morocco. The architecture of Morocco is so interesting because people are living in houses that were built centuries ago. You can tell the the structures were just built over each other. In many neighborhoods there are not even maps because the streets are just twisting mazes between the houses. It was fun getting lost in these alleys, and meeting people in the neighborhoods.

I like the contrast of this photo, with the women wearing dark colors, looking at the bright olives. Morocco is known for growing olives, and since olives are one of my favorite foods, it was like heaven there.

The waiter will bring you big pots of sweet mint tea to enjoy while men sit and chat all day about politics, Mohammad, and community gossip.

Here are some more photos from Nimes, France. I visited an archaeology museum in Nimes where their display artifacts from when the Roman Empire had conquered the area. There are several buildings still standing that were built by the Romans in Southern France.

This is an very old fountain in Anduze. It originally marked the center of a market in the tiny village, and is hundreds of years old.

This are more of my photos from France. From the little village of Anduze in the south of France, I walked all around the countryside. There are miles and miles of vineyards growing grapes for wine. I also found many old castles, nestled along the hillsides. I would sometimes drive into Nimes, which is the closest city. This tiny city is home to beautiful French architecture dating back hundreds of years. They also have a lot of Roman ruins from the time of the Roman Empire.

The stain glass above the doors of the church has the design of the Rose of the Knights Templar. The Knights Templar were very active in the South of France, and most of the churches here have some sort of associated designs in their architecture.

Christmas in France. It was beautiful to be in France during Christmas. All of the tiny streets were decorated for Christmas, and markets were set up, with artisans selling home made crafts. For Christmas Eve, the town of Anduze had a big celebrations in the town square, where Santa visited the children, and everyone drank warm spiced wine and apple cider.

These are some old photographs I took in France. I have about a dozen rolls of film sitting in my refrigerator that I have been waiting for years to develop. I finally had them developed, and was pleasantly surprised to find these images of France. I thought I had just not taken any pictures at all while I was there, because I didn't use my digital camera. I was staying in the small village of Anduze in the south of France, right outside of Nimes with an amazing Chilean family. It was the first snow of the year, and a rare occurrence for te south of France. It was the first time the Chilean woman had ever seen snow, and she happened to be driving when it started. However, the snow storm arrived just in time for Christmas. I took these with an old 35 mm point and shoot, so the quality of the images is not the best.

Persimmons in the snow, France. I think this was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen in my life. While huge snow flakes drifted down from the gray sky, the city was completely empty, still, and quiet. While I was walking, I stumbled upon these bright orange persimmons covered in snow. It reminded me of a Chinese watercolor, simple and zen. Although, I do not think the photographs does it justice.

Castle Ruins, France. I was amazed by how many old castles there were just lying around the french countryside. Most of the architecture of Anduze was from the 1500's and 1600's, which made me realize how young America is in comparison to France.

These are photographs from a garden in Taiwan that was once the estate of a wealthy family. The garden features classic Taiwanese architecture and landscaping.

I took a holiday weekend to Ali Shan in Taiwan. It was very touristy, lots of stuff to buy in shops. There is a lot of fruit and other Taiwanese snacks to try. There is also the Forest railroad and lots of places to hike.

1000 year old eggs. These are a delicacy here. They are eggs which are formented in horse pee, covered in hay and buried. They turn black afterwards and have a very strong taste.

Taipei clothing Market at Hou Shan Pi. Everything is super cheap here. There are racks of clothes in front of every store where things cost about $3 USD each. They wear really fun clothes here.

Palenque, Mexico Mayan Ruins Photos

Photos of Mayan Ruins at Palenque, Mexico. If you want to visit the ruins you can stay in the city of Palenque which is a few kilometers from the park. This is a quaint little Mexican village. You can get a hotel room for two people for about $20USD if you bargain with the hotels. To get to the Ruins there is a public bus that goes there. It costs 10 pesos ($1 USD) for the ride. When you enter the park you have to pay a National park fee of a few dollars and they give you a bracelet. You also have to pay $4.50 USD (45 pesos) for an entrance fee into the Ruins.

The park at Palenque is really hot. I suggest taking lots of water because there isn't really a place to buy water inside the ruins. You could spend hours walking around the various buildings here and also visit the beautiful waterfalls inside the park.

Flores is one of the closest towns to the Mayan ruins of Tikal in Guatemala. If you want to visit Tikal this is a good place to leave from. There are many agencies that can arrange for a taxi to drive you to the park. Flores is a really beautiful little town. It is on a sort of island in the middle of a huge lake. There are lots of cheap hotels and backpacker hostels here. It is a nice place to chill out and go swimming for a few days. I visited Tikal in Guatemala to see the Mayan pyramids there. Tikal has the tallest Mayan pyramid in the world. It was a major city in the southern Mayan world. It is an awesome day trip, or you can spend the night in the park. If you get there in the afternoon you can either camp or stay in a hotel at the park and you get 2 days of admission.

I visited the Cojolya Association of Mayan Women Weavers to learn more about traditional Mayan outfits and the people who make them, and indigenous rights in Guatemala. I interviewed the people from Cojolya and they let me take some photographs inside their museum. They were extremely friendly people and I encourage anyone going to Santiago Atitlan to visit their establishment.

In this region of Guatemala there is the highest population per capita of indigenous people. In Santiago the men still wear their traditional Mayan clothing, a rarity in other parts of Guatemala.

I spent a couple days in Santiago Atitlan, a small mayan village on lake Atitlan. This was by far my favorite town on the lake. It was quiet and there were few tourists. I stayed in a hotel run by a beautiful Mayan family called the Hotel San Pablo

There is a huge beautiful catholic church in Chichicastenango. It was built on Sacred Mayan ground, so the Mayans and people from Guatemala visit this church. Here is a woman selling flowers outside of the church.

Photos of corn, corn, and more types of corn than you could ever imagine. This corn is bought in bulk and then ground up using a metate to make cornmeal. The cornmeal is then mixed with water to make the staple food: tortillas.

Chichicastenango Market Day Photographs

Chichicastenango, Guatemala is known for it's large market held on Thursdays and Sundays. It is one of the largest markets in the country, and indigenous people come from all over to sell their crafts, foods, fruits, and vegetables. Chichi is about a 2 hour ride from Antigua. All over Antigua travel agencies offer shuttles to Chichi for about $10 round trip. It is definitely worth checking out to see the various Mayan costumes and cultures from Guatemala, and to buy authentic souvenirs. (Photograph of a hippie rv/camper driving through Guatemala.)

Shiny bronze hand of fatima door knocker. I think this is a Moorish influence coming from the SPanish. These hand of fatima door knockers are also popular in Morocco and the Muslim world.

This is a photo of the garifunas. The Garifunas are blacks who were on slave ships from AFrica heading to the Carribbean. The ship wrecked and the slaves all swam to shore. They still retain their native culture and language. This is a photo of the garifunas singing and dancing to their traditional garifuna music in a restaurant in Antigua, Guatemala.
This is a photo of cheese and other assorted dairy products sold in a store in Antigua, Guatemala. It is hard to get milk here because it is so expensive. Cheese is also expensive, and they only have this white-ish rubbery kind of "fresh" cheese.
